The Juiceman

We have had a juicer ever since 1991, and we love it! Jeff's favorite is grapefruit juice, and mine is orange/broccoli, and the kids get really creative with carrots, spinach, and apples or whatever.
A couple of years ago we had to replace some parts, and since we didn't replace all of them it never really fit together very well and last week it made an awful noise and quit. So Jeff found a parts replacement place from the web, since they don't make this specific juicer anymore. They had the parts we needed and I thought it was funny that the phone operator took my name and address before he shared the price, because I kept wondering if it was going to be better to replace all the parts again or just buy a new juicer. So as I kept waiting to hear the cost, he finally said, "Well, Mrs. Kunkel, we do have the parts you need for your juicer and we will have them shipped out to you tomorrow, absolutely free!"

I was shocked! "What? Are you kidding me?" He assured me he was not joking. "Well somebody has to pay for the parts? What about shipping?" He said, "Well, today, it's all yours for free!" I asked if he had wings on his back, he said no. What a huge blessing! I was so excited!
Well, when it didn't show up with in a week, we thought I was on the receiving end of an awful joke. And I was kind of disappointed because I had gotten some extra produce to juice in anticipation of having the juicer back. But I could laugh at the wittiness of dialing a wrong number and the quickness of this man's response. But lo and behold, today it came in the mail. Beautifully packaged! Brand spankin' new! And yes it works! And totally free! Amazing!

The Love of Travel

Jeff travels occasionally with his job and when he wants to take us with him we jump at the chance! We have dear friends who are willing to rabbit sit and feed the African water frogs, so there are no worries on the home front to be gone!

It's highly entertaining to watch the younger boys pack their back packs, usually several days before we are scheduled to leave. We start a countdown and they carry them around throughout the day and add to their load more books and favorite things to take along.
The night before we leave, I usually stay up late to finish the packing because I love sleeping in the van! We have a list on the computer of what to bring, so it's pretty simple and we rarely forget anything.

Once everyone is up and has had breakfast, we load the last minute things (coolers of drinks and snacks, pillows, etc.) and then the kids buckle up anticipating the excitement! Jeff and I go through the house, making sure everything is off, flushed, and locked. When we're all in the van he takes a moment to pray for safe travels and a memorable time before we leave.

Right away I have to start a garbage bag to collect our trash. Someone needs a tissue or has found a piece of paper that is no longer needed. Then someone wants to play the alphebet game, but that is pretty hard to do out in the country, so we try to hold them off a bit for that!

We sing, play the grocery game ('I'm thinking of buying something from the grocery store that starts with a 'w'', and then everyone has to try to guess what it is.), the alphebet game, find how many different states we find licence plates from, look for deer (of course!), and sleep. Lydia watched me do some crocheting and was entertained for a long time with a crochet hook and left over yarn! Matthew, Joey and Ben have their seats all in a row and there were a lot of truck and car noise coming from the back and they worked hard to make the semi's honk!

The kids determine a good hotel from a bad hotel depending on the breakfast that is served. We almost always have fresh fruit for breakfast at home, so when bagels, donuts, sugar cereal, waffles, bacon and sausage is served - it's a really good hotel!

With the size of our family most hotels won't allow us to be in one room, so we have a 'girls' room and a 'boys' room.
Girls room rules: HGTV is on, only to be flipped to the food channel.
Boys room rules: hunting videos before bed, and you must never put the seat down!
Usually the little ones run back and forth between the two rooms, this time we had joining doors so that was nice.

Another favorite is snacks. We pick out several different bite size snacks and throw them all together and serve it in little paper cups, and the kids just love it!
We also never eat in the van, but when we're traveling a long ways it makes sense for us to use our stopping time to stretch out and move around, and sit and eat in the van. It's a special treat we all think is so fun!

On the way home we traveled 360 miles and only had to stop once! Jeff and I look at each other amazed the kids are traveling so well, finding it hard to be the adults and not whine ourselves! After a potty break, Jeff ordered our dinner and the rest of us did calisthenics in the parking lot next to the van. Highly entertaining to watch Ben and Lydia try to do jumping jacks!

When we got home we emptied the van and it looked like the bomber threw up all over the house! We had church the next day and had packed our church clothes just in case we didn't get home in time, so Sunday morning some clothes were a bit wrinkly, but we were sure the Lord wouldn't mind.

Now to catch up on the laundry! Weed the garden! And get back to our normal state of chaos! Always ready to go again!

Ben's Update

Praise the Lord! Ben's MRI came back normal! And the best part is that he hasn't had any more seizures for 11 weeks now! We are rejoicing, and may we continue so in every season of this earthly life!

Megan Jean turns Eighteen!

Last week Megan turned 18! This next week is her graduation ceremony and open house and I'll give you an update on her after that, but for now to branch off into adulthood she has started her own blog! http://www.musicmaiden.wordpress.com/ It's her own story, in her own words, her own perspective.

A Father's Day

Jeff is out of town for a few days and it is so true that absence makes the heart grow fonder! He doesn't have to travel very much and sometimes we get to go with him, but since he works out of our home we really miss him when he's gone! I notice how much he helps, giving the kids a bath, vacuuming (he loves to vacuum! Seriously!) I am so blessed to have married my best friend, a wonderful father, and such a godly man. He calls us every night he is away! He talks to every one of the kids and they always have a joke to tell him. Sometimes we have to stay up extra late waiting for his call, but we all look forward to it with great enthusiasm. My favorite is when he will call to talk to the kids and then call later to talk just to me and we chat like a couple of school kids late into the night.

We always try to do some type of home improvement while he is gone to surprise him when he returns. Well, this weekend is Megan's graduation open house so we are busy preparing for that, but I was able to fix the toilet paper holder in his bathroom, so that should count! ;-)

Jeff is a real D.A.D. - Devoted And Dedicated. He takes his job as husband and father very seriously, and we love and appreciate him so very much!

Ben's MRI

Benjamin has been having seizures for the past year so today we had his first MRI. He had to go with out food for 7 hours before hand and his appointment was at 2:15. So my dear husband got up and took him to McDonalds for an early breakfast. The nurses asked him what he had, "Panceeks and sausage!" What did Mom have? "Well, Mom didn't go because she was still sleeping!" ;-)

Then he had to change into a gown. To every ones shock and amusement we discovered he didn't have any underwear on. (Good thing he can't read this yet! ;-) No problem, just needed an extra gown for the back side. Mercy!

He was so sweet and wooed all the nurses with his please and thank you's. I was able to stay with him until he went to sleep and oh, how that can tear a mother's heart apart! We had Lydia with us so that made the time go faster while we were waiting. After growing impatient, I went to ask why it was taking so long for them to call us. They said he had just come into the recovery room and that I could go and sit with him until he woke up. We gathered up all our things (we get anyplace looking like home in no time :-) and made the hike. The moment I stepped beside his bed, he woke up. We snuggled for a bit, and he perked right up when they brought him a popsicle. That triggered a appetite that had not been fed since 7 A.M. They brought graham crackers, apple juice, and he devoured them all! This was a sign he was ready to go home! The nurse got a wheel chair and Jeff pushed all 3 of us to parking! Ben ate for about an hour straight, and a few more times before he went to bed.

We are so glad it's over and thankful it was not a tramatic experience for him, all (but one) of the nurses were all so very nice! Now the waiting...

When we got home the rest of the kids had worked hard in cleaning, changing our sheets, even dusting! And Ben had some special things that they made for him also - it was a very special ending to a very long day!

Ben's Spelling Bee

You could tell by his face that Ben had this defeated look. He told Megan, "I don't know how to spell nuthing."
Megan, being encouraging said, "I think you can spell your name! How do you spell Ben?"
Ben smiled and visably perked up, "B...E....N!"
Megan, "Good job! See you can spell something!"
Then Ben responded, "Yeah, but I still can't spell nothing!"

"Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it." Mark 10:15

Unusual Compliment

I was out and about with all 8 of my children which usually brings about some interesting looks, stares and comments from onlookers. I'm sure it's quite entertaining to most to watch us all load and unload from our 15 passenger van, and do our business. People usually count us all and wonder if they are all ours.

Most comments are very kind and encouraging with the occassional "How do you do it?". We received 3 of them while we were at Culver's (our favorite restaurant!) for lunch. One was from a really sweet family saying what a nice family we have, another was from an older lady saying how much she appreciated watching us all hold hands and give thanks to God for our food. We thanked them for their sweet words, and gave praise to God. But we have never before received a comment like this one:

A young gentleman came up to me and said, "Ma'am, I just want to tell you how much I appreciate the modesty of your family." I thanked him for his kind words, gave praise and thanks to God, and he left.

Then I got to ponder his unusual comment. Modesty? Then I was quickly reminded of what an important issue this has become since our boys have reached this teen age.

Jeff has done a great job training our boys to bounce their eyes, and set no unclean thing before them, but in todays society it's increasingly hard. We love the warm weather, but hate the immodesty it brings.

My heart breaks for a young girl who seems even comfortable exposing her body that God created for her future husband. Undergarments aren't private anymore, nothing is sacred or protected. I immediately pray for this girl that God would bring someone in her life to protect her and teach her such things her parents should be doing.

God is so holy that He said even looking on a woman with lust is like committing adultery. Yes, men are certainly responsible to keep this in check, but women also have the responsibility to not cause them to stumble, or draw the eyes of someone other than our husband.

Modesty comes in many shapes and forms. Body language, facial expressions, conversation, and dress, but this all comes from the heart, a heart that is concerned with glorifying and honoring God, and living true to His Word.

Friends + Fish = Fun

When things start warming up, fishing comes to mind. We went to a friends pond and the fish were biting constantly providing much entertainment!

Lydia loved the bucket and whenever they would jump she would just have this laughing fit and squeal, "Ooooooo!"

Benjamin loved reeling them in!

Joey and Matthew - lovin' it!

Lydia and Emily inspecting God's creatures.

Brothers...Friends!
When there is no hunting season open, fishing will do for Daniel.

Robbie...
Humbled.
And Megan looks most excited because she was the last one to catch a fish! We were determined to stay as long as we needed to get her one!

We caught enough to make a small appetizer for all of us before dinner. It was great fun enjoying God's amazing world!

Matthew turns 8!

He was so excited about this special day he had his wish list and menu planned for this day for a month! He wanted carrot cake - everyone's favorite! Matthew has a great sense of humor and a servant's heart! He loves to play piano, baseball, fish, hunt, garden, and play in the dirt! Can't wait to see what the next 8 years bring!

Bible 'tudy

Today I was making cookies and Benny came in from outside and said, "I need to do my Bible 'tudy! I forgot to do it! I gonna do it on da swingset!". So he went into his bedroom and came back with the book 'Farmer Boy'. He said, "This is going to be my Bible 'tudy for today!" I was laughing so hard!
Then when the cookies were all mixed up, I set the bowl on the table and Lydia climbed up and sat with her feet wrapped around the bowl and started digging in the bowl with both hands! Until she was caught! ;-( She was NOT happy about this!
Better get to bed! Tomorrow is Matthew's birthday! He will be 8!

My Testimony

I'm asked about this constantly and it's taken me a while to get it written, so this actually took place in February, 15 years ago, but here it is!

I have known ever since I was a small child that all I ever wanted to do was be a wife and mother. I'm a people watcher, and all my growing up years I collected mental notes of things I would never do or wanted to do when that time came. I met Jeff when I was 15, and knew right then that I wanted to marry him and spend the rest of my life with him. (It took a bit of convincing Jeff that he should marry me! ;-)

When Jeff and I were married, he decided that we were not going to drink alcohol at all anymore. It had caused us enough troubles and we knew it just wasn't going to help us on the road of marriage. He was very adamant about it and it made sense to me, so since that day almost 20 years ago neither one of us has ever touched a drop of alcohol. Looking back I can see how it was God directing the steps of a good man (Psalm 37:23) because that decision alone has helped us make some very sober decisions that lay ahead.

With Jeff's job in Cutco, he had a lot of opportunities to be inside the homes of many, many families. He observed that those who had well behaved, happy, polite children had two things: a stay at home mom and 'religion'.

So another issue we both agreed on was that it would be best when we had children to have the mom stay at home. (That would be me.) We both had mothers that stayed home with us, and we are ever so thankful, and could see a lot of good in that. I didn't think that much of it at the time because we weren't 'planning' to have children for at least 5 years. Well, God thought different and decided to give us children. I miscarried my first pregnancy and was left concerned if we ever could have children. I was shocked and scared when I found out I was pregnant again, but with in those 9 months God was working on my mothers' heart. A love was developing that was deeper and wider than I have ever experienced before!

We loved being parents and enjoyed each and every milestone in complete amazement! After we had a 2 year old who was becoming a bit sassy, and a very colicky 6 month old, I was a bit weary and unhappy with this me-stay-at-home decision. I had a very selfish and sinful heart! I thought to myself, all I do is wipe! I wipe bottoms, toilets and counters, I just wipe all day! It wasn't the glamorous life I had hoped for. I was used to being paid and rewarded for the dirty jobs. Also at that time we were having other difficulties in our life, marriage, and finances that were becoming mountains, so we decided it might help to try to go to church.

We were not strongly convinced that this was the answer, since we didn't think church did much for us growing up. It didn't keep us from sin; we were amazed that for as much as we had gone to church, we knew very little about what the Bible actually said. Jeff had just gotten a computer and internet access through work and I actually wanted to write a book to tell people that religion is just a hoax, they just want your money, and none of it is true anyway. We were living proof that it didn't work for us. We would stay up late researching after the kids were in bed, taking turns sleeping in and getting up with the kids in the morning.

We tried to disprove the Bible, to confirm our atheist belief at that time, and show what a waste religion was. However, we couldn't do it. All of history supported the Biblical facts, and the Biblical facts supported all of history!

So, we got to thinking, that if the Bible really was true, maybe we should know what it says. We had no idea that it was written by over 40 men, over a span of 400 years, and with 100% accuracy. We started reading, and reading, and reading. It's a huge book!

2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

We were quickly convicted that we needed to start attending a church. We went to a familiar denomination down the street, and there the pastor told jokes, it was just a comedic hour. We knew with our circumstances at the time that we had no business going to church and laughing. We weren't challenged or encouraged to purge or turn from any sin in our life. We weren't encouraged to live a life obediently to His Word.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

So Jeff found an article in the paper about a pastor that was celebrating 40 years of preaching the 'truth of God'. That sounded appealing to us, and we went to this Bible-believing church off and on, hearing truth, but not wanting to acknowledge our sinfulness. After all, we were nice people, did nice things for the most part, had never been in jail, and had never killed anyone. This presumption of course was according to our human standards, not God's holy standards.

Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

Meanwhile I had joined a wonderful group of ladies that kind of took me under their wing. I'm sure I was quite a project in their eyes at the time. They were a great example of godly Titus 2 women - meek and quiet, serving hearts, and happy, happy children. I was naturally drawn to them, and enjoyed their weekly Bible studies on wife and motherhood.

As we started to grow in our knowledge, I started to see myself for the sinner I really was. It took a while for my pride to let God's truth get to my heart, but I will never forget that moment 15 yrs ago......

I was home with the kids, Robbie was fussy, and Megan, 2 at the time, had just made a huge mess of the living room. I had had enough! I screamed at her, something I had promised my whole life I would never do to my children, but I laid into her pretty thick. She just stood there and looked at me, shocked, like she didn't know who I was. I will never forget that look as long as I live! I had heard enough of God's truth to know that I could never fulfill my desire to be a good mother on my own, in my own strength.

Isa 64:6 "For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away."

I knew from John chapter 3 what I needed to do.

John 3:3 "Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.""

I needed to confess; repent (not just be sorry for sin, but to turn away from it); and trust in Jesus' death on the cross as payment for my sins (canceling my debt and giving me eternal life in heaven); accept forgiveness and become a new creature living for Him.

At that moment, I took all my tears and sat at the bottom of our stairs and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. I knew my own strength to be a good wife and mother, to do right, to end my selfishness, was falling short in every area. I asked God to forgive me of my mountain of lifelong sins and help me change my sinful, selfish ways, and I knew He had the power to make even me a new creature.

Christ did change me, Jeff noticed a change in me, and 3 weeks later he got saved too! We were baptized together as a public testimony of our obedience to Christ.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

And that was the beginning of a desire to live a life fully surrendered to Christ and His Word.

It's been the very best decision we have ever made! Absolutely no regrets! And to think where we were 15 years ago, to where we are now and how drastically God has changed our lives for the better, still amazes us! Things that were once enjoyable are no longer tolerable. Things that God hates became things that we hated, and things that God thought worthy became important to us.

This doesn't mean that we are now perfect, because we are not! We are still sinners in need of grace and mercy and forgiveness. But things are definately different in that we no longer enjoy sin or desire to partake in it or put ourselves in it's surroundings.

There is a saying that 'sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay'.

Some of our older children are now saved also and what a blessing to see their hearts changed! It's a constant reminder how we are born sinners having little ones in the house. You never have to teach them to hit, bite, steal a toy from someone else, lie, or be angry. In fact it's a constant job to train their sinful hearts to think of others first, be kind and loving, serve one another. As parents we can try hard to make outward changes to conform, but only God can truly change the heart!

We are so thankful for Christ, and the evidence of His salvation in our family. His way is perfect! And the joy and peace that only He blesses with passes ALL understanding!

If you have never made such a decision in your life, and are not able to point to a time in your life where you know things changed, I beg you to search the Scriptures! The Bible says that these things were written that you may KNOW that you have eternal life! We don't have to hope we get to heaven, we can know for certain! Please consider such an important decision, because you may not have tomorrow to do so! O how He loves you!

Mother's Day

My husband and children are so good to me, the excitement builds knowing what a special day Sunday will be! I LOVE being a mom to Lydia, Ben, Joey, Matthew, Emily, Daniel, Robbie and Megan!

There is a joke around here every time I'm asked, "What do you want for Mother's Day?" I always respond, "I want 8 children who will always obey right away and happily!" and the response I usually get is, "Well, Mom, then there would be 16 of us!"

Ben's Birthday

This is Ben with his 'monkey cheesecake' that he had for his birthday. It is made only from cheese cake! Yes, his birthday was almost a month ago . . . but, better late than never. Happy 4th Birthday to Ben!

Tractor

I just love to see my man on a tractor! It reminds me of when we were 15/16 and I used to ride with him after school on his parents muck farm. Sure brings back wonderful memories! Today the boys broke out the mowers and the smell of fresh cut grass was rejuvenating! Everyone worked very hard, got lots of fresh air, and went to sleep very quickly! None of the little ones stayed up to read tonight!

Bucket Rides

Dad is dangerous on a tractor - he was ready to mow the county! After the work is done, here's what happens!

I'll throw this one in just for fun. I seem to have a proclivity for taking sunset pictures. :)

Questions from Dad

Last night Dad was reading the Bible to us after dinner, we've been reading through the book of Acts. We were reading the part where the centurion sent soldiers to Peter. "How do you think they got there? Why didn't they drive a car?"

"'Cause their weren't any cars," Matthew said.

"So how did they get there, Joey?" asked Dad.

"They rode horses, or mules," Joey answered. "Or pigs."

"Or pigs," Dad nodded, amused. The rest of us were cracking up.

__________________________________________

"What are you looking at, Ben?" Dad asked.

"Mom's pictures," he said.

"Mom's pictures?" Dad questioned.

"Mom's wedding picture's," clarified Ben.

"Oh, they're Mom's wedding pictures?" said Dad.

"'up," agreed Ben. (Dad has started saying 'up' instead of 'yep' now, he likes Ben's version so well.)

"Who did she get married to, Ben?"

"I don't know," was the essence of Ben's answer, but the way he says it is like saying just the vowels without any consonants, but with lots of voice inflection. It's hard to explain, but it's something we all have fun with.

"So why am I there?" was Dad's next question. He didn't get an answer for that one, either. ;-)

Saturday night FUN :)

I found yet another way to push Lydia around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An Exciting Moment!

This happens about once (maybe twice..?) a year! Last month I was on laundry so Mom said "Emily if you get all those baskets totally empty then we'll take a picture and post it on the blog!" Well sure enough we got all of them empty and took a picture! It sure didn't last long though!

Lydia in pig tails!

New Month, New Jobs

Not only is there excitment that spring is closer, but with the month turning to the next, our list jobs change. Everyone seems to be pretty excited to leave their old jobs that they have mastered and known by heart over the past month. We've discovered that we have to divide the rooms of the house into sections and assign 'captains' responsible for each part. That way I don't have to spend my time wondering who I've asked to do which job. That usually ended up with "Not Me" taking responsibility for it anyway. We're thankful the Bible says, 'if you do not work, you shall not eat'!

They each are responsible for their own bedrooms and clothes, then the older kids each have a little buddy to help put their clothes away also. Then we've divided up the 'living' rooms so I can quickly tell who has (or has not) done what. Laundry is a job all in it's own, so they get a couple of the less traffic rooms on their list. For meals we also have assigned jobs that change with the month. Dishes, table, counters, and floors are all pre-determined so there is no confusion of what's expected, and with an assigned buddy it makes a great team. Well, sometimes there is confusion, but we can quickly go to the list!

Over the course of time everyone has experience doing everything needed to run a household! This way Mom can just sit back with her feet up and blog! Ha!
