What Really Matters

My mother says she doesn’t care
About the color of my hair
Or if my eyes are blue or brown
Or if my nose turns up or down.
She says she doesn’t care for things like that.
It really doesn’t matter.

My mother says she doesn’t care
If I’m dark or if I’m fair
Or if I’m thin or if I’m fat.
She says she doesn’t care for things like that.
It really doesn’t matter.

But if I cheat or tell a lie
Or do mean things to make folks cry,
Or if I’m rude or impolite
And do not try to do what’s right,
Then that really does matter.

It isn’t looks that makes one great.
It’s character that seals your fate.
It’s what you are within your heart, you see,
That makes or mars your destiny.
And that really does matter.

Hello everybody!
We are CLOSE to being finally on the mend. Lydia had the flu bug, and Matthew, Joey and Ben had ear infections. And Moms foot is really sore, she dropped a can on it and people (us people!) have been stepping on it. Here (below) are pictures of our Valentine tulips that daddy gave us girls!
And a picture of a bow-tie Daniel made out of a dollar bill---you really CAN do it! It is hair pined to Matthew’s collar!
Hmmm, what else are we doing, oh yes, Daniel is taking guitar lessons, and Robbie is taking trombone lessons and mom is teaching me flute, Megan and I are playing violin! And we're still all taking piano!
Well I guess that’s all for now,
To-da-le-do! Emily
P.S. We (Megan, Emily and Lydia)had more than one tulip!

just a cute one!

:-)!!!

Love!

Valentines day is a big deal around here . . . for the girls. The boys have their special time during hunting season, so don't feel sorry for them. But this holiday is all about showing love to the ladies, Jeff always does such a good job with that! He has always gotton a flower vase of beautiful flowers for each of us girls, and spoils us rotton! He is such a good example that he is setting the bar high for a future son-in-law, and making a future daughter-in-law very happy!
I have never questioned Jeff's love and loyalty to me, so even though it's a special day, it's just like any other.

Megan adding pictures - the dress Lydia has on used to be mine. :-)

It takes a Blonde

It's been a few weeks since the event . . . it's taken a while to gain sufficient emotional distance from my trying experiences, but I believe I have sufficiently recovered that I can now tell you about it.

You see it was like this. I got up at the unearthly hour of 7 in the morning and went out in the unearthly temperature of 3 degrees to carry water to ornery goats. I should mention that Robbie was actually the one carrying the water. So to reward ourselves we decide to get breakfast. McDonalds being my brother's place of choice, we pull in and I park. "What're you doing?" Robbie asked. "Um, I thought we were going to eat here." "No, go through the drive through," he tells me. "Then we can listen to Glenn Beck while we eat."

So being the nice sister that I am, I go through the drive through. I have a secret dislike of drive-throughs, but I don't want Robbie to know that, see. I later found out the feeling is mutual - drive throughs don't like me, either.

So I order the sandwiches and push the gas pedal to pull around to the window. Nothing. "What's going on?" I turn to Robbie. "Dunno," he replied. "Give it some gas."

I gave it some gas. Motion did not result. I had to face it - I was stuck. Stuck in a McDonalds drive through. With no fresh snowfall for 4 days. Me. Stuck. In. A. Drive. Through.

Robbie got out and tried to rock the Suburban. "Gun it!" he yells. I gun it. He comes around - "You're not supposed to keep gunning it, you're burning tires." How am I supposed to know? He says gun it, I gun it. And gun it again.

"Hello and welcome to McDonalds. May I take your order please?" The cheerful voice comes out of the speaker. "Umm, it's still me. I'm, uh, stuck." "Oh," came the reply. I'm sure she was mystified but she made no further comment.

"Here, let me try it." Robbie slid into the drivers seat. And wouldn't you know . . . he reversed and pulled forward and we were suddenly unstuck.

I got back behind the wheel and pulled around to the window. "How do you get something this big stuck?" the cashier asks incredulously. I don't know, I really don't. Like I said, it takes a blonde.

I came home whining piteously, "Mom, I don't try to be blonde." My Mother replies "It just happens naturally, right?"

So yes, this is Megan. Your friendly, neighberhood blonde.

And the voices of my friends continue to haunt me. . . .
"No way! You got stuck at Mickey D's?"

From the mouth of Ben

Being 3 he has quite a lot to say;

Coming in from sledding and taking off his boots, "My boots LOVE my socks!"

Sitting next to Joey when Joey asked to be told a story, "Now tell a story to me!" 'I just did.' "No you didn't, you just told a story to Joey!"

"I have to come snuggle you in your bed in the morning, because I'm so precious!"

"I just made you a white tail horse!" Maybe we talk too much about white tailed deer around here? ;-)

It's fun to be us!

When a family doesn't watch TV or play video games, you have to be a bit creative. So tonight I think Jeff reached all the way back to 1977. Jeff did it first. You stand in a door way with your palms to your side. Then you lift the backs of your hands until they hit the doorway and push for about 30 seconds. Then step out of the door way and your arms sort of lift up all by themselves. Really! The kids thought we were just joking at first, and laughed so hard as they tried it. The little ones couldn't quite fit, but did a good job imitating and getting laughs just the same. Then they wanted to try it with their feet and see if that would work - oh my!
The rest of the evening was spent jumping over the couch pillows, that was quickly brought to a halt when Lydia joined the pile of couch pillows!
Jeff calmed them all down with a Bible study and a chapter out of the book he is reading to us "Winter with the Moody's". Now all is a bit quiet at the Kunkel house, it really is fun to be us! God is good!

Emily's First Deer

January 23-(Friday) I, Emily got my first deer! –a button buck! I got it in Ohio with a cross bow, in a tree stand, with my dad of course! We had three deer come behind us, scented us, and ran back in the woods. Now EVERY time we’ve been hunting, deer ALWAYS came behind us, but never in front. So after the three went back into the woods, another buck, from the same woods came behind us, came out and walked toward the corn piles that dad set out,(dad said I would have to shoot a deer SOON because we might have to sell the vehicles to get more money for corn!) then another buck followed. They were both button bucks. This deer saw us or scented us, were not sure, and ran away, another one kept on eating.
It was about 3 minutes before dark, and I could see the pin on the snow but not on the deer, so I put the pin on the snow, then slid the pin on the deer, and shot it. It ran 30 to 45 yards and dropped. We got down from the tree stand and walked to the spot where I hit it.
So we tracked it and I saw a brown spot up ahead and said:
“Do think that’s it Dad”? And Dad said: "I think it is Emily! Go get you’re first deer!” We had hot dogs, breakfast sausage, and Canadian bacon made from the meat and it's all been delicious! Goodnight! Emily

Ham!

(Pictured are Ben, Matthew and Joey on the right)
Joey is in Kindergarden and last week while we were working on reading we had an exciting moment. He looked at his book, sticking his tongue out and making adorable faces trying to figure out what I was teaching him. Then he smiled and said, "Ham!". He looked at me and gave a look I will always treasure and said, "Ham!" a bit louder this time. He jumped around in his chair and said, "Ham! Ham! Ham!" It was in that moment he understood, it made sense, and his life of reading began. We sat and read 2 1/2 of his reading books. Lunch was necessarily postponed a bit, nobody really complained except Lydia, and we broke out a cup of Cheerios for her and Ben to tide them over.
As everyone came together in the dining room, feeling the hunger pains, they all passed along their congratulations and enthusiasm to Joey for his reading!
With every child, when they have met this milestone, we take them to get a reading lamp to put by their bed and a new Bible. They now have joined the "I can stay up 30 extra minutes at night and read!" club.
I would fail miserably if I tried to put into words the joy of being able to teach my child how to read. Something that he will carry his whole life long. Something that will teach him how to do anything, be anything!
Most importantly, it will allow Him to meet God. To understand his purpose of which God had created him for. Hopefully by reading God's Word Joey will realize that he, along with the rest of us, is a sinner in need of a Savior.
Ofcourse if not carefully protected, reading can also have the pull and start an appetite of ungodly, even evil and wicked things. Children like what you feed them. This is true with real food, as well as music, books, everything.
So please pray that the Lord would continue to provide us with wisdom and discernment so our Joey, and those to follow, will have reading material that will provide them with godly wisdom that will have eternal value, blessings and peace.

The Tailless Opossum

Dad has his office in the basement and he heard some scratching in the window well. He came upstairs and asked for special hunting assistance from Benjamin, Joey, Matthew and Daniel, and soon excitement was on the rise. They thought is was just a mouse or two, but it was an opossum! Dad picked it up with a stick and gave Lydia and Mom a close look from the inside window, she loved that! It was growling at their face from 1 yard, and showing it's teeth. Then he took it to a tree, but it didn't have a tail so it couldn't stayup. Then the kids chased it all around and it ended back to the window well. They got it out again, and it went under the porch, so they needed a big pole to push it out. It ran to a bush and then eventually they chased it into the field. You would have thought there was prize money with the end result, everyone was thrilled with the chase.

Happy Birthday Jeff!

Tomorrow is Jeff's birthday! Happy Birthday, Happy New Year! This is a copy of my most prized possession! Jeff went to a hotel for a business trip and accidentally brought home an extra hanger. I remember him asking me if I knew which one was the hotels, if I could tell the difference, so we could send it back. I couldn't and didn't think of it again. This was the letter that came in the mail with the returned check. I opened it in front of the kids and we talked about how blessed we are to have a husband and father like Jeff. He knows and lives like God truly sees everything. He doesn't want anything to seperate him from his relationship with Christ, or prevent any of His blessings. This little piece of paper shows what integrity this man has, he does the right thing even if no one is looking or will ever see. I would have never known he even sent a letter or check to this hotel. And it just so happened that I got the mail that day. I'm thankful for his heart, for who he is and what he stands for! Matthew 8:36 "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"

Proverbs 28:13 "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy."

Here is a list of what the kids are thankful for (in their own words):

Lydia: DaDa!

Ben: When he loves me! Takes me to the store. Play baseball. Mowing the grass with me on the mower.

Joey: I like buying presents for him. He's a nice dad. He likes to be my dad and helps alot. And trips. He loves us.

Matthew: Going hunting. Pitching to us at baseball. Walking with us around the trail in the summer. How much he loves us. Taking me for rides on the tractor at the farm. He lets me shoot the cross bow and practice shooting. Blessing us in so many ways. Taking us on bike rides, and plays with us.

Emily: I like it when he takes me places or hunting. How much he loves us. He's a good teacher. He's patient with us and plays baseball with us.

Daniel: That he is a Christian and he teaches us about Jesus. He takes us hunting. He's fun! He teaches us alot of things and homeschools us.

Robbie: He always takes time to play with us kids, and scedules alot of special events for the family, and for each of us alone with him. He's very unselfish and gives us all the good hunting spots.

Megan: When we ride in the car together. When he just comes up and asks me, "How are you Megan?", usually a couple of times a day. When he laughs at something funny.

Happy Birthday Jeff!

The Baker

This is the product of Emily's breadmaking. And already 2 loaves are missing! It amazes us all to watch her so easily whip up 25-30 cups of flour in a bowl she cant wrap her arms around! The smell is wonderful and it is so yummy! Thank you Emily for blessing us all so! Matthew 4:4 "Man shall not live on bread alone, but by every word uttered by the mouth of God."

Now we just need a candle stick maker! ;-)

Old Post :-)

Megan here, I'm going through the posts on the blog, these posts got written but apparently never got published (?) so I figured might as well let you see them, even though it's a little late. :-)

Mom wrote:
It used to be in the beginning that I HAD to get the kids' pictures taken ON their birthday! Now it just seems normal to let such things slide a bit, and the more children we've added the longer it takes to get things done. Not that they are any less important, they always get done, it's just an impossible pace to keep up.
So that all said, Daniel is now 12! I have told him, as I have my other kids who have turned 12, that, "It's time to be about your Father's business!" I'm trying to quote scripture and let them know that we don't use any of those teen excuses, it's time to be living for the Lord. Well, they always joke, "Do I have to start selling Cutco?"
Daniel is our quiet, humorous, energetic, outdoorsman. He has put 6 deer in our freezer so far, ducks and geese. He's a good aim, and a wonderful part of our family!
He loves drawing and making potatoe heads (that's on the brownies!)

I think this is Emily writing here:
Oct.24th was Daniel's Birthday! He turned 12. It was very exiting :-) Here are pictures,:D

Lydia loves ice! every time someone opens the freezer she will try to get ice!

Just going through pictures and found a few to post. There's a few from Thanksgiving, and then some more recent ones.

Cheesecake

Friday night, I made my first cheesecake! The batter was not extremely thick, but it sure tasted good. Here's the recipe:

Marble Cheesecake

1 cup graham cracker crumbs
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese

3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 large eggs
1 (1-ounce) square baking chocolate, melted
Combine graham cracker crumbs, 3 tablespoons sugar, and butter; press onto the bottom of a 9-inch springform cake pan. Bake at 350*F (175°C) for 10 minutes.
In a bowl, combine cream cheese, 3/4 cup sugar, and vanilla; beating at medium speed with an electric mixer until well blended. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Blend melted baking chocolate into 1 cup of the batter. Spoon the batters alternately over crust; cutting through with a knife to create a marbling effect.
Bake at 450°F (230°C) for 10 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 250*F and continue baking for 30 minutes. Loosen the cake from the rim of the pan; cool before removing from the pan. Chill.

19 Years!

Today is our 19th anniversary! 19 years, 228 months, 48554 weeks, 6935 days! Jeff has been my very best friend for over 26 years now. We have experienced better and worse, richer and poorer, sickness and health, and the good has always out weighed the bad. He is such a wonderful husband and has always shown a deep love and concern for me. He meets my every need and want. He encourages and calms, and keeps me laughing. He's humble and honest, thoughtful and loving. He listens and is so full of wisdom. He fears the Lord and doesn't think twice about obedience to His Word.
I have wonderful memories of our wedding day, it snowed lightly and everything illuminated the Christmas spirit. We didn't have a lot of bliss those next 5 years, we went through many financial and parenting struggles. Then things turned around when we both surrendered our lives to Jesus Christ in 1994. Things have continued to get better and better ever since. We are so thankful for that decision!
We spent the entire day together! We ran some errands, went to lunch, did some Christmas shopping, and then we did something that we have NEVER done together before! He took me hunting! When he was getting me a camo wardrobe around last night, I said (in a kind of sarcastic way) "This is so romantic!" And he responded so seriously and happily, and said, "I KNOW!!"
Daniel was so sweet and wrote me a long note and gave it to Jeff to give it to me later. It was about a hunters wife who begged her husband to let her come along. Reluctantly her hubby agreed and got her set up in a stand. Hubby was going to take a walk and take a look around, but would come back if he heard a shot. He left, and not 10 min. passed and he heard a shot. As he walked back to the stand he heard his wife saying, "Get away from my deer!" "Get away from my deer!" Then he heard a mans voice saying, "Certainly ma'am, just let me get my saddle off of it first!" So I called home to assure Daniel that I would look for saddles first!
It truly warmed my heart as Jeff helped me put all the layers on in order, he zipped my zippers and fixed my hat. He thought of everything I would need! We walked to the blind and he has exactly 5 steps to every 8 of mine. We laughed at the noise we made getting situated in the small blind, affectionately called "The Palace". He kept asking me if I was cold, and made sure my zipper stayed up all the way in my heater body suit. I didn't get really cold, but I probably would have if we were out there much longer, it was snowing and 15 degrees. And I left my layers on almost all the way home! As we drove around we saw several does snuggling their fawns, that blessed my mothering heart! So I was kind of glad we only saw 3 coyotes while hunting. He even went to get the truck in the dark to pick me up at the Palace!
We got home and the kids showered us with homemade cards, gifts and lovins!
I can't wait until our next anniversary!

Anniversary

Today is Mom and Dads Anniversary!

Last night Mom switched the showerhead in Dads bathroom to the kind that hotels have so he really liked his shower this morning. I'm not going to tell you what Dad got for Mom becuase I don't know if Dad has given it to her yet. To celebrate, they left at about 8:30 to spend the whole day together! They are going to go shopping, move the sprayer up at the farm to my Grandpas, and go hunting! The best part is, Mom's going to have the gun! The challenge is to get a buck bigger than mine or Robbie's! So we're just hanging out at home doing whatever.

Last night we had some fun with Dad.

With Lydia too.

Robbie likes to carry Lydia on his shoulders.

Lydia likes to bring Mom stuff from the pantry.

Friday night we went and got our christmas tree. We looked for 1/2 hour before we found 'the perfect one'. :D It was really cold out, and icy too!

Daniel

Q. Who was the best financier in the bible?
A. Noah. He floated his stock while the whole world was in liquidation.

Saved!

Matthew came to me with a tract in his hand, he came closer to my side and said, "I need to get saved." Since Jeff was out of town I took him to my bedroom, out of the hussle and bussle, so we could have a heart to heart talk. I asked him what it meant to be saved. "Saved from hell when I die." Why do you need to be saved? "Because I've sinned alot!" What do you have to do to be saved? "Pray this prayer." And he showed me the tract. I explained to him that this prayer was just an example of what we should really feel in our hearts as we talk to God. That we can say a prayer, but if we don't truly have a desire to turn from our sins and walk in obedience to His Word, then a prayer doesn't mean much to God or anybody else. He quoted me some verses that he had been learning: Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 10:9-13 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For "whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." I asked him if he was ready to make such a decision and that it would change his whole life. He knealt beside my bed and prayed the sweetest prayer. He started out praying for Dad being out of town, so I thought, maybe he's too young yet, then he continuted to repent of his sins, asking to be saved from hell, and change his heart to be more like Jesus. Then I prayed for him and as we stood up he wiped his eyes and said, "I was almost crying!" Simple child like faith. So easy to understand, so easy to believe, so easily rejected by most. One of our favorite verses is 3 John 4 "There is no greater joy than to know that our children walk in truth."

Megan, the Noveliste

I am now a novelist! I have spent the month of November typing furiously - I typed 50,795 words, to be exact. I did this to participate in National Novel Writing Month - fondly known as NaNoWriMo. 10 years ago Chris Baty, the founder, got together with 20-something friends of his and they all decided to write a novel in a month. If I recall correctly, six of them made it to the end. :-) As this year's NaNoWriMo ends, 119269 people have signed up, and 18,229 of them have written novels of 50,000 words or more, in the month of November 2008. Collectively, all the writers have written almost 1.5 billion words.

I did this mostly for fun, partly for school, and partly to see if it actually could be done - it can! It was so cool. I would write mostly at night, and I managed to stay fairly on target the whole month, even finishing a little bit early. I typed 'The End' at 1:15 this morning, and then was so excited I didn't go to bed until three.

Now the questions that everyone wants to know: Can I read it? No. Not for a while, anyway. What is it about? Top secret, but it's not historical fiction. How many people died? Ugh . . . nobody died! (I can't tell you how many times my family has asked me that.)

It is a fun and trying experience to be a novelist. Anything that goes wrong in your life is blamed on writers block, and at certain times housework may be neglected - pressing deadlines, you know.

So now I get to return to a more normal mode of living - one where you don't use the word count function every fifteen minutes. Next year, I'm looking for more people to join me and we can have word wars. :-)

Tonight I went back to my previous hobby/addiction - LibriVox. It's so nice to read someone else's words for a change!

In upcoming life, I get to participate in a performance of Handel's Messiah next week, which will hopefully help me to recover from post-noveling blues. :-) I can't wait!

Another Trophy!

Friday night, Dad and Daniel went hunting in Indiana. They had decided to hunt Friday night, instead of Saturday morning. 10 min. before dark, they saw a nice buck walking about 150 yards away. After they waited another minute, they saw it come out again 80 yards away, and walking towards them. After unsuccessfully trying to stop it, it finally stopped after the 3rd try. Daniel laid a perfect shot on him, and the deer only ran 80 yards. It was an 11 point with a drop tine, and the first buck that Daniel had ever killed with a gun.

Congratulations, Daniel!

A Trophy!

It was an exciting day of deer hunting. Robbie started out early with a nice 8 point, he dropped it and as they waited a few minutes along came another 8 point, only considerably larger than the first. He couldn't resist, and we are so thankful for such provision! So by 8am he had two 8 points! Something like that will probably never happen again. Thanks for putting meat on the table Robbie!

Pursuit of Animals and Purple Toes

Emily and I ganged up and painted Lydia's toes purple. They're so cute and she'll touch them and then looks at us and giggle. Mom loved it and Emily and I painted ours to match. Benjamin had a hard time understanding why he couldn't paint his too.

Tomorrow, of course, is the opening day of gun season. Daniel gets to go on his first gun hunt in Michigan, which has him quite excited. I'm even going up in the afternoon - I get to go milk goats in the morning (doing a friend's chores - Dad calls me the goat whisperer), then I'll join the rest of the crew for an evening hunt. I'm not the one with the gun though - just along for the ride.

And so, the Kunkel's wind down for the evening. Mom is reading to Ben and Lydia, Joey and Matthew are chasing each other around the coffee table, Emily is reading over my shoulder, Robbie is 'quietly' playing a Mozart piece, and Dad and Daniel are making last-minute preparations for tomorrow's hunt. In a few minutes we will pray and half of us, at least will be in bed. Good night all.

The problem with blogging!

(Sorry, but I'm up with Lydia again, so....)
Okay, here is my dilema: I've been thinking on and studying on the topic of 'pride' lately. It's an ugly and uncomfortable thing, that pride is. So I just wanted to make clear that in this blog you're getting the 'goods' of the Kunkel bunch! I don't need to name names, because we are all sinners here! I had a conversation with a friend once and she was commenting on how 'happy' we are and how 'wonderful' our life is, blah, blah, blah. So here's the truth:
We are happy...most of the time. We have our moments, meltdowns, and moods, but for the most part they are few and far between. But the credit for that has to go to Jesus Christ! He, through His Word, has taught us how to live happily, how to function, how to forgive, how to love, how to parent, how to be thankful, and His plan really works! Much to even our amazement!
I was so tempted to send to this friend a ziplock sample of what was swept off the kitchen floor, what we pulled out of the dryer, and found under the couch. I wanted to show her the pen marks that never hit the paper, to take a picture of the banana that dropped to the floor, turning black before anyone wanted to pick it up, but everyone was able to avoid stepping on it. I wanted to send a picture of our laundry room, our storage room and our kitchen when the tribe gets hungry. I also thought a picture of the toothpaste that was on the wall, 3 feet higher than any child would be impressive. I thought I should let her know how my clothes are a magnet to food, snot and hot wheel tires, and my unmatched sock bag can now be used as a piece of furniture! So we have issues, there is no perfection here!
But it's all good because the Lord is in it and He always works everything together for the good for those who love God (Romans 8:28). I wouldn't trade positions with anyone! Though when I get my hands on "Not me!" it's going to be ugly!

Sleepless nights

My parenting life has been full of them. I'm up with Lydia, I think she's teething, or maybe just going through a phase of needing me. She digs with both hands in a frantic to find skin. Then can fall back to a sleep that will probably seize when moved. Wanting to make sure I'm here, holding on, protecting and loving. Oh, I cherish these moments, and in a world that rejects and gets frustrated of a child actually needing a mother, I relish it! I know it won't last long. I still am amazed at how perfectly they fit in the crook of my arm! I think of all the kids and can remember so clearly doing the same with each of them. Wonderful memories with each one of them, alone in the middle of the night. It's a good investment with an incredible return, one with no regrets!

Girls' Room

This past weekend Emily and I turned adventurous and painted our room:

Sunday us 5 older kids went to the orchestra concert with a couple of friends. As we were walking out, Matthew commented "That was really cool when they were banging those pan lids together!" Yeah, I'm guessing those were a leetle more expensive than pan lids.

Lydia Faith is 1!

Lydia is 1 year old today! (Well, this was to be posted on the 21st!) Looking back this seems to be a good year to have behind us. (Our blogging started with www.lydiakunkel.blogspot.com) It's been one of the hardest, most challenging years of our parenting experience. I don't ever remember a child crying so hard for so long, so colicky as she was. I think it took her 4-5 months just to get used to us, then another 4 months to adjust to the world around us. A sneeze, shutting of a door, or one of those "hey Mom!"'s would set her off for an hour and a half. I remember asking God to allow us to see her smile and laugh just to be encouraged that we were doing okay with her. For 8 months she had to be nursed every 2 hours, that was tough! But as I look back I can see God's Mighty Hand and purpose working in and through our lives and that always makes any trial so worth it!
When I was 5 months pregnant the Dr. found a tumor inside my uterus the size of an orange, attached to me, but posed some serious problems if it grows and crowds out, or steals nutrients from this tiny child who we had not yet met in person.
You could see her moving around it in the ultra sound. We were to come back in 6 weeks to see what it would do and what our plan would be to deal with it. 6 weeks of waiting and wondering, and praying. We didn't talk about it mostly because there was so much unknown, too many 'what if's' to think about, and we wanted to see how God would answer our own prayers. A verse we constantly reminded ourselves of was Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." We already knew how incredibly blessed we were to have 7 healthy children and if God could use this trial in our life to draw us closer to Him, or the hearts of our children, or those around us, we were ready for whatever the Lord had for us. Now before that sounds so spiritually strong, I have to honestly say, that morning of our appointment 6 weeks later I couldn't even open my Bible. I remember thinking, what am I going to do, beg? plead? I just wanted to be ready to accept what ever the Lord had for us.
Jeff and I went in alone (left all the kids in the waiting room!) Dr. did the ultra sound right away and much to all of our amazement - the tumor was gone! GONE! Dr. was shocked and looked on the old ultra sound and said, "It was right here, and now it's gone?" He had no explanation for such. To God be the glory! We were so happy, but when it was over and I got back in the van, I just sobbed. I couldn't understand God's goodness, grace and mercy towards us. Because of sin, this is a suffering world. I felt so unworthy, but so incredibly thankful! He's still performing miracles!
I have thought about this over and over and over the past year.
it was encouraging and comforting to me during those long tiresome nights. I have played in my mind 'what if' things turned out differently. Now I can look back and see that God showed Himself evident in my life. He showed me how much He cares about me and His children. He answered our prayer! So I don't mind the sleeplessness, the nursing, the training, this child just like every other child is a gift from God Himself! And He decided to give her to us! And we are so thankful He did! May we prove ourselves worthy in raising such a blessing for His purpose and His glory! I pray we are always mindful of His goodness, of His character, and His plan, when the trials and sufferings come, and they will come! This ain't heaven yet!
Lydia weighs 20lbs, has 5 teeth, 3 on top and two on the bottom, has been walking for a month, and now can carry something along on her journey. She says, "Da,Da" and has the cutest laugh and the best slobbery kisses you can imagine!

MOM!

I have 8 children who can say the word "Mom" 62,493 times in one day! And I never hear it the same way twice! It has several variations from 'Mommy', 'Ma!', 'Hey, Mom!', 'Mum', 'Oh Mom!', 'Ma'om', as well as intensities and volumes!!!!! There are even whines and wimpers that have my 'mother' name all over them! They have several prefixes of "Do you know where Mom...." and suffixes, "Mom, can you..." attached. But my all time favorite is, "I love you Mom!" And Ben will add, "so... much..!"
I count it a great priviledge and joy to be the mother to 8 children! I believe this position to be a blessing straight from God Himself! Easy? No! Exhausting? Yes! Challenging? Absolutely! But the opportunities to teach a child about my Lord, Jesus Christ, and to show them the amazing grace He has exhibited in my life, brings an abundant of blessings that pass ALL understanding!
Which brings to mind my favorite song: A Mother's Love

As a mother loves her child, fulfilling every need,
With her gentle touch and smile, such love is pure indeed.
So our Savior loves each one, who humbly kneels to pray,
He who asks to be God's child, will hear the Father say:

I am your God on High, I will your need supply
As in a mother's care, My love I truly share.
If you will ask of Me, I will sufficient be,
And through a mother's love, you'll learn of Me.

Only mother's voice can soothe the sorrows of the day.
She can all the pain remove in such a tender way,
God the Father hears our cry, and comforts when we pray,
All to Him, who will draw nigh will hear the Father say:

I am your God on High, I will your need supply
As in a mother's care, My love I truly share.
If you will ask of Me, I will sufficient be,
And through a mother's love, you'll learn of Me.

Oh, and it helps to have such a wonderful husband to share all of these trials and triumphs with!

Golden Birthday!

Today was Emily's special day - she turned 10 on the 10th! We went to the park for lunch and she got stung 6 times! That was such a bummer! But the rest of the day was wonderful and we are so blessed by our Emily!
She found 3 more caterpillars! And we successfully released one Monarch Butterfly! It was so wonderful to watch! We tagged it and then forgot to write the number down. It flew all over and we prayed that we would be able to catch it again to keep track - and our prayers were answered!

I CHANGED THE VACUUM BAG

Ok, so the vacuum bag was full. Like, so full, when you tried to vacuum something, it would spit Rice Krispies out at you. (We were vacuuming up Rice Krispies yesterday.) So all adult male members of the family being gone, Mom calls me, Megan, to change the vacuum bag. There was, however, a problem with that; I do (note: did) not know how to change a vacuum bag. My father and brothers are the vacuum tinkers in this family, with the result being I rarely even have to use the thing. (I'm terribly blessed, I know.)

"Mom, I don't know how to change the vacuum bag."

"Well you're seventeen years old, I'd think it's high time you learned!"

Mom had a good deal of convincing me that the bag needed to be changed now, not when Dad gets home tonight. I remained unconvinced, but ended up heading to the basement to look for the 'vacuum bin'. (In a house where the male members are vacuum fanatics, you actually have a bin with replacement parts and extra bags. Strange, I know.) Now where to find the vacuum bin? It actually was in the storage room, though I did not see it at first glance; it had been moved from a green bin to a grey bin. Why, don't ask me. The vacuum bin has always been a green bin.

I run upstairs and present myself, grinning ecstatically over the vacuum bag held in my hands. "I found the vacuum bag!"

My mother's look seemed to imply she found my statement an obvious one.

I'm actually expected to put the new bag in. So I sit down and look at the vacuum. Mom has deemed me intelligent enough to complete my task without advice from other persons.

"Mom, do you know how to change a vacuum?"

"Yes, my daughter."

"So how do you do it?"

My Mother happens to be walking into the next room, and does not apparently hear me.
I look at the vacuum. It has a lever that looks as if something might happen if you twist it. I therefore twist it. A few yanks and the top panel came off. Aha! There was the old bag. I yanked the old one out. (Didn't spill it all over myself, sorry.)

My Mother walked back in the room.

"Mom, I feel like Marty!"

Mom got immense amusement out of this statement. She giggled:

"Yeah, "how'd you get to be so old without knowin' how to do nothin'?""

So I manage to get the new bag in the vacuum, put the whole thing back together, tested the finished product, and felt immensely proud of myself. As I walk into the kitchen to throw the old bag away, I noticed the trash bag was full. As I attempted to shove it down further, my Mother walks in:

"Oh yeah, you wanna take that out too?"
